Tear fluid lysozyme concentration: guide to practolol toxicity.

چکیده
Heerfordt's syndrome is an unusual manifestation of sarcoidosis consisting of parotitis with chronic or subacute uveitis and often complicated by cranial nerve pareses, usually of the facial nerve. Originally described in 1909,1 it was not recognised as a manifestation of sarcoidosis until 1937. The complete picture is rare. Scadding2 had no cases of the complete syndrome in his series, and Greenberg et al,3 reviewing 388 cases of sarcoidosis, reported only 8 with uveoparotitis and only one with a facial palsy. Familial association in sarcoidosis is well recognised.4 In 13 instances of sarcoidosis affecting identical twins the manifestations of the disease in each twin pair tended to be similar.5 This seems to be true of less closely related subjects. Interestingly, both our cases presented almost simultaneously with a most uncommon form of sarcoidosis and followed very similar courses.

Quantitative tear lysozyme assay in units of activity per microlitre.
An accurate method of assaying the tear lysozyme concentration in units of activity/mul has been developed. Normal physiological levels which vary with age have been determined. It has been demonstrated that measurement of the volume of tear fluid collected and assay with a calibrated standard are essential for the accurate determination of the precise concentration of lysozyme in the tear flui...
متن کاملBeta-adrenergic receptor blocking drugs: tear lysozyme and immunological screening for adverse reaction.
Patients who had received long-term therapy with practolol and other beta-adrenergic receptor blocking drugs were examined ophthalmologically. Tear lysozyme concentration and serum autoantibodies (antinuclear antibodies, DNA-binding antibodies and intercellular cement substance antibodies) were measured. It was found that beta-adrenergic receptor blocking drugs may have a pharmacological effect...
متن کاملInvestigation of the accuracy of tear lysozyme determination by the Quantiplate method.
The accuracy of lysozyme concentration determination by the method of measuring lysis diameter in agarose gel slabs containing Micrococcus lysodeikticus bacteria uniformly suspended throughout the gel was determined for various methods of tear sample collection. The effects of storage of lysozyme solution samples at subzero temperatures for several days was also examined. It was found that a po...
متن کاملBiological variations of lysozyme concentration in the tear fluids of healthy persons.
Concentration of tear lysozyme was measured in healthy Indian subjects of the same racial group aged 2 to 78 years by a single radial immunodiffusion technique. Variations in its concentration between the two eyes, during the day, over a period of time, in both sexes, and in different age groups were studied. The diurnal and age-related changes in the concentration of tear lysozyme were found t...
متن کاملLysozyme in the tears of newborn babies.
Tear lysozyme concentration was measured in term, preterm, and small-for-dates infants using a modification of the lysoplate technique. The lysozyme concentration was greater in the term infant than in preterm and small-for-dates infants. The values were found to increase with birthweight and gestation to a term value which is similar to that described in adults. There was no relationship betwe...
